RULES:
No application is required. Students residing in Escambia, Santa Rosa and Okaloosa counties in Florida and students residing in Baldwin and Escambia counties in Alabama are eligible to enter the 2014 Constitution and Coffee essay contest.
Students ages 10 through 18 are eligible for the contest. Entrants must be age 10 to 13 to qualify for the middle grade level group or age 14 to 18 to qualify for the upper grade level group.
To avoid disqualification, all essays must be mailed by U.S. Postal Service (USPS) and must include a cover sheet with only the following information.
COVER SHEET:
1. Your name and address;
2. a current, active e-mail address or a current phone number, preferably both
3. the name of your school or educational affiliation
4. your current grade level
5. (optional) If you have discussed this essay with one of your teachers, you may include their name on the cover sheet. This may help if other contact efforts are not successful.
ESSAY PAGES:
To help the committee ensure fair and impartial judging, please follow these guidelines:
A. No identifying information such as names, signatures or labels (except page numbers and the essay’s title) are to be written on any pages of the essay other than the cover page.
B. Essay must be no fewer than 800 words for ages 10 to 13 years and no fewer than 1600 words for ages 14 to 18 years.
C. Neatly and legibly written or typed are both acceptable.
D. If typed: please double space, using only one side of the paper.
E. High School age entrants will be expected to provide citations.
Citing your sources: When quoting from other people’s work or articles, state the source’s name and where you found the quote. You may cite sources in a number of ways, such as; place the citation at the end of the sentence in parenthesis or at the end of the page, preferably with a footnote number inserted at the quote in your essay text. Any other customary citation methods are also acceptable.
An example of a citation from a web resource is listed below:
Goodman,John. Whats wrong with the drug Industry? John Goodman’s Health Policy Blog. National Center for Policy Analysis, 23 Sept.2011 Web 24 Sep.2011. healthblog.ncpa.org/whats-wrong-with-the-drug-industry/ .

G. All entries containing plagiarized material or copy & pasted and non-cited material will be disqualified.
How essays will be judged:
Entries will be judged on style and content. Writing should be clear, articulate and logically organized. Winning essays will show an understanding of the Constitution and its intent. Non compliance with any & all rules may be disqualified. Judges will be selected for their knowledge and understanding of the Constitution and it’s history & principles. To ensure the anonymity of entrants at time of judging, the judges will only be able to identify the essay’s text by a numbering system. There will be 4 total rounds of judging. Winners names are unknown to judges until after essays have been ranked and the contest results finalized. All entries must solely be the work of the student entrant and will be screened for plagiarism.
PRIZES WILL BE AWARDED ON DECEMBER 1, 2014
All prizes will be awarded in cash. All winners must first present a parental permission slip, signed by their legal parent or guardian, giving their permission to accept the award and use their name and photo in any publicity for this contest. (For this contest, student’s age on November 15, 2014 will be the age group the student is qualified to enter)
Prizes: 10 cash prizes in all, to be awarded as follows:

Q-How should I format my entry?
A- All essays should be in English only, double spaced, neatly typed or hand written legibly with pages numbered.
Q-How do I submit my entry?
A- Use a legal size envelope and fold entry 3 times to fit or use a manila envelope to send without folding if it is too thick. All entries must be sent by U.S.Mail to the address given below. Be sure to check postage as no “Postage Due” envelopes will be accepted.
An e-mail notification of receipt will be sent to all who provide their e-mail address on the cover sheet.
Q- What happens if I do not have the minimum word count?
A- Less than minimum word counts for your age group will be disqualified. No limit or maximum for length. Citations are not counted.
Q-Is there anything else you can tell me about how to stand out from the crowd?
A-Yes. Here are a few suggestions for participants: Stick to the subject and topic. Submitting your essay in the proper format is essential, but the substance of your essay is the most important part. If you write a fantastic essay that doesn’t address the central question you won’t win. Submit a professional document. Double check grammar and spelling and try to make rambling sentences more concise. Follow and demonstrate a clear vision. This contest leaves lots of room to address the subject in a variety of ways. Students should attempt to be creative, clear and persuasive in their approach to the topic. Using sources other than those shown is encouraged.

A- Winners will be announced on the weekend prior to December 1,2014. Notice of winners will be publicized by radio and Newspaper on that weekend. Recipients will be notified as to how the prize will be presented, where and when. All prizes will be awarded in cash. For general background information on the designated topic for the essay, please review our websites occasionally. Posts pertaining to the essay topic may be added as additional research is completed and posted. Contest participants should not limit their research to the information provided on the Constitution and Coffee websites. Independent research and study will be rewarded in the judging phase.
